Architectural Glass & Fine Art

Lighting the Way, 2013

Vitreous enamels and sandblasting on tempered glass
Four windows, each 2.5′ x 7.5′ x 5/8″
East and West Stairwells of Churchill Hall, Southern Oregon University,
Ashland, OR
Fabricated with Peters Glass
Public Art Commission by: The State of Oregon & The Oregon Arts Commission

Lighting the Way activates the stairwells and offers calm in a hectic day. The windows overlay views onto the campus. They project patterns into the stairwells ever-changing with the season, time of day and weather. Evenings, the illuminated windows provide walkers-by and library users bright color and further opportunities for contemplation.

I welcome commissions that take advantage of natural light to create a contemplative, spiritual space. This video goes into depth about spiritual themes in my work.

“I go to the building just to see what the projections are doing.”

—Peg Sjogren, Professor of Art, Southern Oregon University

“It’s like being inside of a watercolor.”

—Teresa Chenney, FASLA, Landscape Designer

“The windows make the stairwells sing.”

—Saralyn Hilde, retired Public Art Manager, Oregon Arts Commission

Upon seeing the windows, a prospective student expressed her delight by spontaneously singing Ave Maria.”

—R.H., scholar and grandfather of prospective student
