Water Images
As a child, I often took the city bus to school from a stop one block from Lake Michigan. I watched it morph from smooth to ten-foot waves, blue to grey. Water has always been my favorite element, and it has been a motif in my work for decades. Waves fascinate me with their endless variety of shape, texture, and color. The sounds of water sooth me — I fall asleep to recordings I make of moving creek water. I am mesmerized by the endless visual relationships between water, horizon, and sky. Streams, lakes, and oceans are among the natural spaces that, thankfully, citizens can enjoy without ownership, yet if I were to have a second home, I’d choose one where I could watch the water and horizon the way one might watch a fireplace or campfire. It is these qualities of water I’ve tried to carry into the work. I hope the commissioned artworks provide fascination, offer respite, and elicit memories.
